Gun Safety 101

The four rules of firearm safety, explained simply. Memorize them, live them, and share them.

The Four Rules

  1. Always treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
Even if you just checked it yourself, maintain the mindset that it is loaded.
  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction at all times.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to shoot.
Index your finger along the frame until the moment you commit to fire.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Know your backstop and what’s around and behind it before you press the trigger.

Why it matters

These four rules work together. Follow them consistently, and accidents are nearly impossible. Break one, and you rely on luck. Break more than one, and tragedy is likely.

Gun safety is about discipline and respect. It applies at the range, at home, while cleaning, and anywhere else a firearm is present.
